Connecting Generations: St Finbar's Biography Project
St. Finbar’s Primary School in Brighton East recently embarked on a two-month journey that brought them closer to a dozen Mayflower Brighton residents.
In small teams of two or three, the students interviewed residents over six weeks, gathering life stories and personal photos to create touching 'This is Your Life' style biographies.
Building Intergenerational Bonds
This project was more than just an exercise in writing - it was an opportunity to forge meaningful intergenerational connections. Through these interviews, the students delved into the residents' childhoods, family lives, career experiences, and the evolution of technology.
These experiences helped the students gain a deep appreciation and respect for the older generation, providing life lessons and wisdom that will stay with them forever.
A Celebration of Stories and Memories
The project culminated in a special ceremony where the students presented their carefully crafted books to the residents. Each biography booklet was designed and assembled by the students, capturing the rich histories of their subjects.
The event was a celebration, bringing together residents, their families, and the school community to honour the bonds formed through this collaboration.
Words of Appreciation and Encouragement
Mayflower CEO Stuart Rodney, expressed his admiration for the initiative, saying, “It was my pleasure to attend this fabulous intergenerational initiative. It’s wonderful to see young and older generations connecting in such a meaningful way.”
With grateful hearts, residents gave each student a certificate of appreciation and a golden pen, encouraging them to continue their writing journey.
A Day to Remember
The day concluded with a shared afternoon tea, and students reading their stories aloud, further strengthening the connections made.
This project beautifully showcased the power of storytelling and the joy of connecting across generations, reminding us of the importance of sharing our stories to foster understanding, glean wisdom, and create lasting memories.
