Kaluki Fun
A Game of Kaluki Brings Joy to Mayflower Brighton Independent Living Residents
There’s nothing better than a good game of cards to stimulate the mind and spark lively conversation. Every Thursday, a group of ladies from Mayflower Brighton Retirement Village gather in the cozy lounge to enjoy an afternoon of Kaluki. This fun and engaging card game, part of the Rummy family, has become a weekly tradition for these residents, offering them not only mental stimulation but also a chance to socialise and share laughter.
Kaluki is known for its many variations, and even its name can be spelled differently — some spell it "Kalooki" or "Kalookie." However, no matter how you play or pronounce it, one thing remains the same: it’s a fantastic way to build connections with other people. The game’s mix of strategy, skill, and luck keeps things interesting, and each week brings new excitement to the table.
“It isn’t as hard as it looks,” explains Margaret, a regular player. “We have a wonderful time together.” Margaret, along with her fellow players Marj, Natalia, Judy, and Shirley, have formed a tight-knit group that looks forward to their weekly game. The friendly competition, combined with the relaxed setting, creates an enjoyable atmosphere that brightens up everyone’s day.
Beyond the fun of the game itself, these meetups have become a cherished time for the ladies to bond, reminisce, and share their lives. Whether they’re discussing strategies or simply catching up on the latest news, the game of Kaluki has become a beloved tradition at Mayflower Brighton, fostering friendships and creating lasting memories. For these residents, Thursday afternoons are about more than cards — they’re about community.
