The Melbourne Cup is 'the race that stops the nation', and it is also a great excuse for a party. Across Mayflower, residents let their hair down and donned their best to celebrate in style.

At Mayflower Brighton, live performer Jan serenaded residents, while they indulged their palettes with Champagne and a delicious high tea. Hors d'oeuvres, including mini custard and fruit tarts, mini croissants, and beautiful ribbon sandwiches, were all freshly prepared by our onsite chef.

Popular catchy tunes also had residents hitting the dance floor and kicking up their heels. At Mayflower Reservoir, residents enjoyed music and dancing, to a spot of Roy Orbison and popularly requested Elvis tunes. Afternoon tea featured a sumptuous fruit platter.

Both occasions were suitably adorned with horse themed decorations, and completed with a fun and competitive 'horse race'. Keen participants in the 'horse race' mounted their horse on a stick, and rolled giant dice. Each resident then took a step according to the number they rolled.

The winners were given prizes and cheered by onlookers. At Mayflower Brighton, Pam, a well-known horse racing enthusiast won the race – taking home a life-sized chocolate champagne bottle, 'trophy' and 'flower garland'.

At Mayflower Reservoir, there were three rounds, with Thelma, Maggie and Nazzareno taking out the win with a giant trophy and pamper prizes. And, of course, there were sweepstakes. Brighton retirement village resident Estelle and aged care residents Dorothy and Elizabeth won the jackpots by rightly picking Verry Elleegant to win the Cup.
