Residents Create Lavender Posies at Mayflower Aged Care
In November 2021, Mayflower Aged Care residents enjoyed a delightful activity of crafting lavender posies. Lavender, known for its calming properties, filled the room with its soothing scent, creating a peaceful atmosphere as residents gathered to prepare small posies to keep or gift to loved ones.
The activity encouraged residents to use their creativity, selecting sprigs of fresh lavender and arranging them carefully, sometimes tying them with twine or decorative ribbons. For some, it brought back fond memories of gardening and flower arranging, while others found joy in simply working with the fragrant stems. The group also shared stories, reminiscing about gardens, nature, and the simple pleasure of working with flowers, all while strengthening their bonds with one another.
Beyond being a creative outlet, the lavender posy-making session was also a sensory experience, sparking conversation and providing therapeutic relaxation. Studies have shown that sensory activities, like handling fragrant plants, can stimulate memory and improve overall well-being, especially for seniors. Mayflower’s commitment to enriching residents' lives with meaningful, sensory activities was evident as each resident proudly displayed their beautiful posies.
In addition to adding a calming presence to the residents' rooms, these lavender posies were a symbol of community and shared experience. The joy of working together, sharing stories, and crafting something beautiful brought a special touch to the residents' week. It’s small, meaningful activities like these that make life at Mayflower feel like home—a place of comfort, creativity, and companionship.
