A Taste of Harmony: Celebrating Diversity Through Food and Conversation

Our team across Mayflower came together to celebrate Harmony Day and the diversity of our nation through food.

We came together to share delicious dishes from different countries and cultures, and engaged in stimulating conversations about the significance of the food to each person's heritage.

Highlights of the event included Mayflower Brighton's general manager, Rumesh’s amazing savouries, made fresh by his mother, and Environmental Services team leader Derya's delicious dessert, Baklava. Many in our team wore orange, the official colour of Harmony Day, to symbolise our commitment to inclusiveness and respect for diversity.

Our CEO, Stuart, was particularly thrilled to see our team coming together for 'A Taste of Harmony'.

"Our team members come from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, and this diversity makes us stronger and more dynamic as an organisation.

"Today, on Harmony Day, I was thrilled to see everyone coming together to celebrate our differences and share in each other's cultures. It was heart-warming to see so many people bringing in plates of food to share and to see everyone enjoying each other’s company,” says Stuart.

Australia is a diverse and multicultural country, and some statistics that highlight this include:

  • Nearly half (49%) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
  • We identify with over 300 ancestries
  • Since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia
  • 85% of Australians agree that multiculturalism has been good for Australia
  • More than 70 indigenous languages are spoken in Australia

At Mayflower, we recognise the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating our differences. Our 'Taste of Harmony' luncheon was a fantastic opportunity to do just that. We look forward to continuing to celebrate and appreciate diversity in all its forms.
