Allen, a much-loved resident of Mayflower Brighton’s retirement village, was recently surprised when he received something very special from our government in the mail.

Allen was awarded a medallion, accompanied by a certificate, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and to show appreciation from a grateful nation for his contributions to protecting our way of life.

Pcitured above; Allen displays the red poppy side of the medalion. Allen, grateful for the medallion and recognition of this significant milestone, also acknowledges the fallen. “My medallion signifies their efforts more than mine,” he says.

During the Second World War, Allen served with the Australian Air Force as a Medic in New Guinea and helped transport and treat wounded soldiers during conflict.

The medallion has a bright red poppy on one side. The other side says, “SECOND WORLD WAR, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE” and lists the countries fought by Australian soldiers.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Darren Chester, launched the medallion, thanking and acknowledging the veterans of the Second World War.

“These brave Australians served our nation in the far corners of the world, fighting in theatres of war from Europe to North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, to Asia and the Pacific, with the conflict also reaching Australian shores,” Mr Chester says.

“Australia can never fully repay the debt we owe these amazing men and women.”

Allen, grateful for the medallion and recognition of this significant milestone, also acknowledges the fallen. “My medallion signifies their efforts more than mine,” he says.

The certificate reads:

“A grateful nation expresses its sincere thanks to Allen J Wood, for your service and contribution to the war effort and to the freedom of nations”

We also thank you for your service and honour you, Allen.

Australia Remembers.
